Want to Know How to Make a Great Taco?

How to Make a Great Taco

If you're a fan of our taco restaurant, it might be that you want to create your own at home. With this in mind, here are our tips on making a great taco.

Start with the tortilla

Fifty percent of a taco is the tortilla so it's important to get this right. For a healthy and tasty taco, check out the tortilla recipe below.

All you need for the creation of your tortilla is Masa Harina (Mexican corn flour), warm water, and salt!

Here are the steps needed:

Add 2 cups of Masa Harina and 1/2 teaspoon salt into a mixing bowl. Add a cup of warm water and stir until the water has been absorbed. Your bowl will be full of flour bits so you need to add more water incrementally (a couple of tablespoons at a time) until the flour bits have melded into a dough.

Separate the dough into small chunks and roll them between your hands to form dough balls.

You then need to squish the balls into flat round tortilla shapes using a tortilla press or anything you have to hand to squish them into shape.

Now you need to cook your tortillas.

Heat a skillet on medium-high heat, add a tortilla and flip it over after 10 seconds. Then cook each side of the tortilla for a minute or so until you start to notice brown spots on either side. They may start to puff up but don't worry, this is normal.

And that's it! After following those steps for each tortilla, you're good to go. Be sure to focus on the consistency of the dough before cooking, as you don't want something that is crumbly. And be mindful of the heat of your stove, as you may need to turn it down if you notice black, rather than brown spots forming.

Load the fillings

The fillings you use are entirely up to you, but for a healthier, protein-rich option, you might want to consider lean chicken or seafood. Cook according to any recipes you find and then add the salsa and toppings. You can make your own salsas using recipes you find online or you could buy them from a store.

Traditionally, you have a choice of red or green salsa. Red salsa consists of cooked tomatoes and toasted dried Mexican chillis, and green salsa is usually a mixture of fresh tomatillos, cilantro, and green fresh jalapeño. You can add your own ingredients according to taste but aim for a creamy texture for best results.

Toppings for your taco can include cilantro, onion, and lime. These should be finely minced or sliced so you're not eating big chunks of them. If eating a fish taco, some people opt for minced crisp cabbage, although for these and any other kind of taco, use ingredients that are right for your tastes.

Will you have the perfect taco?

Practice makes perfect so you may not get the perfect taco the first time you try to create one. There are lots of videos online if you need tutorials so head to Google or YouTube for a closer look.
